Harlan Ellison wrote a short story called "From A to Z In The Chocolate Alphabet". It's really twenty-six extremely short science fiction stories, organized in the obvious way. This one is mine.
A is for APOCALYPSE
The world has ended nineteen times already. No one noticed. When the world falls apart into a million pieces, the old man puts it all back together, stepping between the moments and knitting it all together again. It's a gift. The world never fits back together in exactly the same way it breaks apart, and it hurts the old man's head when he remembers things that never happened. He had a family once, but he lost their piece of the world the last time he put everything back together. He misses them very much. Time was, your imaginary friend wasn't imaginary at all.
