B is for BELIAL

Belial is the Prince of Lies. Those who make it their business to know such things say Belial has been exiled from the Pit and abides in the city of New York. Sometimes, a fool will hunt Belial through the city's corridors of power and wealth, finding nothing but despair. The lies of kings and plutocrats are amateur night, and the Prince is too good for the bush leagues. Belial works in a deli in the Bronx. Ask for the pastrami.

(I should look up the Ellison story and make sure I'm not just quoting it back to you. I think I made this one up.)

Apparently, the title of this entry is the title of an Ian Drury song, or album. It is also the title of a short story by Greg Egan. That story is very important to me. It is the truest description of being depressed that I know.

A long review of the story from a personal perspective. )

If you read all the way to the end of that... thank you. And "Reasons to be Cheerful" is a really good short story.
