Okay, it's 4 AM and I'm up. This is never good.

This is my traditional time for anxieties and despair, but I think I'll skip that for this post.

I like fried chicken. It turns out that there's a whole complicated cultural history about Americans and chicken, including some racist stereotypes. (It's odd to come upon a "new" racial slur as an adult. You think you've heard 'em all...) It turns out, chicken was considered poor-folks food for a long time, but that it became more acceptable for the middle class when the rising cost of beef in the Seventies pretty much forced it onto the stereotypical middle-class table. Or, that's how the story goes.

It's funny how, at least in my town and I think in my state, fatty foods are considered low-class. Basically, the right kind of people do not eat anything fried. I think the right kind of people don't really eat meat, but I also think if you eschew any kind of animal products whatsoever you've shot right past the upper stratum of society and out into crazy. I'm a weirdo, so I've never been sure what's proper.

I would never want to force meat on anyone who prefers not to eat it, although I of course prefer it when no one gets smug about their dietary choices and how great for the planet they are. But my personal attitude is... lettuce is what food eats. And the idea that I can stick it to "the man" by eating a cheeseburger makes the burger too delicious to resist. There is nothing on this earth better to me, when I am in my right mind and everything in there is working like it's supposed to, than a double bacon cheeseburger. And you have to kill two separate kinds of animal to make that, and I'm all right with that. Thanks, pigs and cows. 'Preciate it. So, basically, the theme of this post seems to be, give me an animal and I will eat of it.

Of course, in reality, the Man is selling me the cheeseburger.

Barbecue is also good. Be nice if my town had a decent barbecue place.
