I have this theory that there are three basic pillars (heh) of the male social identity. You got your Job, you got your Place, and you got your Person. Every guy I know basically defines himself via these three things- what they do for a living, the physical area they control- usually, but not always, where they live- and their significant other.
It would not at all surprise me to learn that women, too, think in terms of Job, Place, Person. I'm just into the whole guy thing right now.
