I Tried to Write Drusilla
Apr. 15th, 2007 12:18 pmWriting Drusilla's internal point of view is really hard.
In fact, I basically couldn't do it, which is too bad.
I'm convinced Drusilla is aware of the salient facts of Chosen as far back as just after the end of Becoming. I think the specific tone of her comments- she's never angry with Spike, just sad- suggests that she isn't feeling particularly spurned or jealous. I think she sees him burn to death, and that's why he "tastes like ashes." Her last words to him, chronologically, after he definitely chooses Buffy and everything loving Buffy will lead to, are, "Even I can't help you now."
(Of course, this is all bullshit, kind of. I'm certainly not suggesting Chosen, or even Spike's arc, was planned that far in advance. But if fanfic isn't about reading things into the text, what's it about?)
I tried to tell the story, but since it's mostly about how Dru is feeling and how Spike has to misinterpret what she tells him so that events can proceed as we see, I couldn't do it.
I like Drusilla a lot, though. I'm glad we last see her intact.
