A student asked Feynman, "Why is it that magnets attract and repel each other?"
Feynman said, "If I were to tell you that magnets behave as though they were attached by invisible rubber bands, you might accept that, and feel as though I had said something. But if you asked me why elastic bands pull things together, I would have to talk about magnets- so it would turn out that I had cheated you rather badly. So: magnets pull together and push apart because magnets pull together and push apart."
And the student said, "Thanks a lot, buddy. That's no answer at all."
But someone who overheard the original question was enlightened.
(More on my gamer-ness later. I can't hack anything long right now.)
