I never really understood how "Cockney rhyming slang" was supposed to work. I got the rhyming thing, but how did you know that "trouble and strife" meant wife, as opposed to, say, knife? Apparently, there is a wide shared context behind the rhyming slang that makes it intelligible.

The Simpsons forms the basis for most attempts at communication between me and my oldest friends.
