So, here's the thing.

An altered state of consciousness is not an excuse. Not remembering it is not an excuse. Calling yourself by a different name is not an excuse.

If I get all coked up and then drink twenty-seven whiskey sours and run over a nun, the onus of that act is on me. It doesn't matter that I never would have done such a thing sober, that I'm repulsed by it, that I was calling myself "Jesselus" at the time, or that I've repressed the memory as hard as I could, or that I never intended such a thing to happen when I first went off on my bender. I am the guilty party.

So I have this friend who thinks that Chosen crapped all over the basic idea of Buffy. His argument is thus:

"In every generation there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness..."

This setup for the series is blown all to hell when there are two Slayers on every corner- never mind that "one girl in all the world" went away in season, well, two. Chosen is certainly a big change to the mythology. I really think the themes kind of force it, though.

I certainly went through a moment of duh-piphany where I said, wait a minute, life sucked for a lot of people in high school, not just me. My problems are not unique and special, they're just mine. And I had that moment in my late teens, about two years after I left high school. :) I think many of us have that moment. So if the basic idea of Buffy started out as "high school is hell", isn't Chosen kind of the ending you have to have?

When you see this in your LJ, quote the Doctor.

The Doctor: It's either Romana... or Fred!
-- The Ribos Operation (1978)

It's a tough choice.

Writing Drusilla's internal point of view is really hard.

In fact, I basically couldn't do it, which is too bad.

I'm convinced Drusilla is aware of the salient facts of Chosen as far back as just after the end of Becoming. I think the specific tone of her comments- she's never angry with Spike, just sad- suggests that she isn't feeling particularly spurned or jealous. I think she sees him burn to death, and that's why he "tastes like ashes." Her last words to him, chronologically, after he definitely chooses Buffy and everything loving Buffy will lead to, are, "Even I can't help you now."

(Of course, this is all bullshit, kind of. I'm certainly not suggesting Chosen, or even Spike's arc, was planned that far in advance. But if fanfic isn't about reading things into the text, what's it about?)

I tried to tell the story, but since it's mostly about how Dru is feeling and how Spike has to misinterpret what she tells him so that events can proceed as we see, I couldn't do it.

I like Drusilla a lot, though. I'm glad we last see her intact.

There is no way in hell I'm going to be able to get 22 fics, each with a beginning, middle and end, out of this premise. So this will be an abbreviated "season" of things.

I'm going to be more or less forced to write about some Forn Parts to which I have never been. If I make a risible error, please tell me.

Relics part 2 )

This little subsection was going to be longer, but I have a doctor thing. I'm not in love with these phone conversation scenes...

This is a Buffy/Angel crossover fic, set after Not Fade Away. I intend it to be part of a huge series. It cannot be reconciled with the Season Eight comics. The series is intended to be structured like a season of one of the shows, in that the formal plot skeleton is action-adventure. It is tagged "alpha" because I'm not sure where I'm going with it and reserve the right to revise in the future. It is a sequel to my previous fics "Come the Revolution" and "Perfect Day."

Comments? I'm not too proud to beg...

More fic...

Posting fic feels creepy, but I can't stop myself.

The title is from a Lou Reed song, and if I were a different person I would have just vidded it instead. My favorite version of the song is actually a duet between Kirsty MacColl and Evan Dando.

I guess this is AU, because it makes some assumptions that will become obvious upon reading it.

If you read it, please let me know what you think.

I watched this for (I'm pretty sure) the first time since it originally aired.

Oh my God, y'all, it is so much less annoying now. For one thing, when you aren't taking it personally, it's just a stupid episode that spends the entire A-plot making its leads look really stupid. If you know that the entire point of the episode is to make the main characters look like idiot assholes- if you're in on the joke- then it just becomes tedious instead of painful.

The Fred scenes, which are why I watched it, were awesome. I had this idea at the time (and have since, ewww, written fic)- but Illyria is so Fred. Even when she's talking in that level, vaguely threatening tone of voice, and using the faux-important big words, and being blue- Fred, Fred, Fred. And no matter how much Wesley whines about it? Still Fred.

In conclusion, Mutant Enemy is a land of contrasts. Thank you.

ILLYRIA: My face is not my face, I don't know what, what it will say...
-- Underneath (Season 5, Episode 17)

I forgot about that one.

CONNOR: That guy made me really cranky.
-- Origin (Season 5, Episode 18)

Unfortunately, I forgot about that one too. Although I still believe Fred would say that under the appropriate circumstances.

More violence...

The shippy bits are mostly in the last two chapters.

Come the Revolution part 8 )

I know what I hate, and I don't hate this. I'm really glad I finished it this time.

Now I have to think of a Buffy fic that will stay a Buffy fic. :)
jmatonak: (Default)
This one is pretty long.

Come the Revolution part 7 )

I think there's one more part, maybe two.

How are you liking it so far?

And yet more...

Okay, I've seen issue 2 now.

I understand Issue 2 of the Season Eight comic is out. I haven't seen it yet, so don't spoil me, please.

Come the Revolution part 4 )

As always, I welcome comments.

More fic. I'm as surprised as you are. This part has cursing.

Come the Revolution part 2 )

I crave attention, no matter how negative. If you have anything to say, please, please do.

I really wanted this to be a Buffy fic, but it's an Angel fic instead. With guest stars.

There are no special pairings here and so far it's R-rated at most, for gore and violence.

I perhaps should mention that this follows immediately from the end of Not Fade Away and has spoilers for all of both shows.

Come the Revolution part 1 )

I'm desperate for feedback. Even more so than other fic authors, I mean.

BFF

There are some people in Buffy fandom who feel that the great friendships of the high school years between the "Core Four" characters (Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles) were sort of marginalized and discarded.

In the case of Buffy and Willow, I think these people are very much mistaken.

We'll soon see, most likely, what Joss thinks about the friendship these days. My guess is, once they finally manage to get into the same room, they'll still be thick as thieves.

Back when all of this first aired, I think I had some different ideas. I was wrong then. I'm right now. And never mind what I might say in three or four more years.

PS: I've always found the way Buffy instantly bonds to Willow (and she does, go watch) to be one of the most charming things about Buffy. Buffy gives this whole speech in Empty Places about how she's always kept herself isolated... but right there, first minutes of the first episode, there's a handshake and Buffy picks up a best friend for life.

PPS: Although Willow probably has a favorable opinion of Buffy's attractiveness, I don't think there's a sexual attraction there at all, or that there ever was. As opposed to Xander, for reasons passing understanding.
